The Future We Deserve  - Service Design

The Brief

The Future We Deserve was a project that asked us to consider how we could build a service for the future to improve our lives. This gave us the freedom to carefully consider areas of Irish life that we felt needed to be reimagined. As a group we began by examine current issues we could build an innovative service for.  We focused our attention on an age old issue: alcohol in Irish Society.

Research

We began our research by building a cultural probe to invite the public to to discuss the role drink played in their lives. We build a giant pint and asked people to write on it. It began a means of starting conversation that allowed us to delve deeper into peoples relationship and alcohol.

It became apparent that drink in Ireland had a complex place in our social landscape. People were quick to talk about the 'craic' but reluctant to admit the darker aspects of drinking.

From our street interviews we began to sort and identify themes. We then decided we needed more depth and interviewed; those who had suffered from alcoholism and been around alcohol abuse.

We were really able to see the darker aspects of addiction but then found there is a clear difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse.  As a group we decided that addiction was a topic that carried to much emotional weight for us to continue with, so we focused on alcohol abuse in 20 - 30 year olds.

Our objective became how we could create an intervention in people's behaviours and attitudes towards binge drinking.
